The Métis Veterans of BC were once again invited to attend the National Aboriginal Day at CFB Esquimalt on June 17th, 2010. The Defense Aboriginal Advisory Group worked very hard to make this day a great success. Our day started with a private luncheon with Rear Admiral T. Pile and several other commissioned officers from the base, as well as Aboriginal Serving members and our Métis Veterans along with the Defense Aboriginal Advisory Group.
The Métis Nation of BC was asked to present, REAR ADMIRAL T.H.W. PILE, CMM, CD, COMMANDER, MARITIME FORCES PACIFIC, JOINT TASK FORCE (PACIFIC), JOINT TASK FORCE GAMES with a sash to honor his Métis heritage and also commemorate his retirement later this year. An Olympic Sash seemed the most fitting as Rear Admiral Pile was Commander in charge of the joint task force for the 2010 Olympic Games. MNBC Minister Responsible for Veterans, Lissa Smith presented the sash to Rear Admiral T. Pile who was very touched and honored to receive the sash and during his opening remarks spoke at length about the sash and his own Métis Heritage to the audience of approx 200 people.
Métis Nation Veterans Web Portal Launched
Ottawa, ON -- Métis National Council (MNC) President Clément Chartier today launched the Métis Nation Veterans Web Portal, a new website that will help share the stories of Métis Nation veterans, celebrate their contributions to Canada, and help ensure every Métis Nation veteran has access to all the benefits and services they are entitled. "This portal is a place of all Canadians to learn more about the brave and selfless sacrifices Métis Nation veterans have made in serve to this country over the last 125 years," said Chartier. "It's also a valuable resource for Métis Nation veterans and their families to find information on services available."
The Métis Nation Veterans Web Portal hosts information on benefit and services offered by Veterans Affairs Canada and how Métis Nation veterans can access them. The Portal will also help identify and assist any Métis Nation veterans who have not received all the benefits available to other Canadian veterans. "While this web portal is a positive first step, there is still much work that needs to be done to ensure all Métis veterans receive the benefits they are entitled," said David Chartrand, MNC Minister of Veterans Affairs. "I hope the Métis Nation Veterans Web Portal will help Canada move forward in properly acknowledging and honouring Métis Nation veterans."
The Métis Nation Veterans Web Portal features photos and videos of Métis veterans and a continuously updated list of commemorations and ceremonies being held across the Métis Homeland, Canada and around the world. Métis Nation veterans and their families can also post their stories of war to share with all Canadians. Visitors to the portal can also post message of thanks and remembrance in honour of Métis veterans. "I invite all Canadians, in particular young Canadians, to visit this portal to learn more about Métis Nation veterans and the important place they will forever hold in this country's history," said President Chartier.
The Métis Nation Veterans Web Portal was created through a partnership with the Government of Canada. President Chartier is thanking the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister for Veterans Affairs, and the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Federal Interlocutor for Métis, for their support in making the portal possible.
